Toto Wolff, head of Mercedes, recognizes the good feeling that has with the German but says that’s not the situation Mercedes is in.
The withdrawal of Rosberg fired all the rumors on substitutes until it was announced to Bottas. Alonso, Wehrlein, Vettel were some of the names that were taken to replace Rosberg. Toto Wolff acknowledged that he spoke with the Spanish two-time champion and now has opined on the option of the Ferrari German.
Mercedes boss said to Autosport,
“I like Sebastian’s personality and I get on very well with him. I think for any team, if you have a vacancy, it would be silly of not thinking about Vettel.”
A statement that seems to open the door of the four-time champion, but the Austrian leader tones,
“However, now that is not the situation of Mercedes. We have two drivers and we are committed to them and we are going to give them all the necessary support. Valtteri will need support in the beginning as he comes to a new team and has the modern Formula 1 fastest driver as a team mate. I do not think about 2018 or beyond, it’s a long way off my priority list.”
Wolff stresses that he is talking about the current season and not the future, a phrase that will reopen the possibility for the next season if Bottas’ performance is not adequate since he only has a signed contract for a year.
“I think we have not agreed on a specific time because we want to wait five or six races to see how things are going to be and then study the situation, but it’s something that is far away.”
